Another round of rain is coming our way over the next few days, and according to our friends at the US National Weather Service, these incoming storms have the potential to be just as significant as last weekend’s rainfall that caused flooding throughout south-central Montana.
The forecast shows heavy rain will start falling Tuesday night, creating a chance for flash flooding. Heavy rain and flooding are expected to continue through Sunday.
Local ditch companies have been notified and have agreed to turn off or reduce water flow to make room for stormwater.
If you see debris covering storm drains, removing the debris will help prevent water from backing up. Only remove the debris if it’s safe and you can do it without putting yourself in danger.
If your street begins flooding within Billings city limits, you can call Public Works and leave a message at (406)657-8250. You can also contact them via Facebook Messenger at City of Billings Public Works.
We also ask 9-1-1 is only called for life threatening emergencies, or if you see any washed-out roads.
If you encounter a flooded road, remember the National Weather Service campaign of “Turn Around Don’t Drown.” It’s easy to underestimate the water depth and lose control when walking or driving through flood waters.

Local emergency services are being inundated with calls related to this week’s significant rainfall.
Dispatchers, law enforcement and fire departments are aware the rain is causing issues along storm drains, roads, ditches, low lying areas, and for some, flooded basements.
While the rainfall continues, we are asking residents to reserve calls to 911 for life-saving emergencies.
Street crews can clear debris from storm drains, however, our first responders are unable to assist in situations of flooded fields, basements, and homes, unless someone’s life is at risk.
If you encounter a flooded area or a road with running water, turn around and find an alternate route. Flood water can be hazardous and has the potential to wash out roads, stall vehicles, and cause drivers to lose control.
More rain is expected in the coming days, so we encourage everyone to stay vigilant and be prepared for flash flooding.
