Senator Tim Sheehy has nominated four students from Montana for admission to United States Service Academies. The nominations are part of the annual process that allows eligible students to compete for appointments to these institutions.
“My wife and I met at the Naval Academy, and we were proud to serve our country, me as a Navy SEAL and Carmen as a Marine. There’s no higher calling in life than serving your country, and Carmen and I know how rewarding it is to answer the call and attend a service academy. It is one of my greatest honors to nominate these outstanding young Montanans for appointment to a U.S. Service Academy and to serve as America’s next generation of leaders and warfighters,” said Senator Sheehy.
The principal nominees are Logan Brown from Belgrade, who attends Gallatin High School and was nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy; Elise Daugherty from Gallatin Gateway, who attends Lone Peak High School and was nominated for the U.S. Air Force Academy; Gavin T. Garrison from Glen, who attends Beaverhead County High School and was nominated for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; and Sam Talbot from Bozeman, who attends Gallatin High School and was nominated for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Applicants must apply directly to their chosen academy in addition to securing a Congressional nomination. Selection is based on academic performance, physical fitness, extracurricular activities, leadership skills, motivation, and suitability for military service. Graduates are required to serve five years in the military after graduation.
Information about applying can be found on Senator Sheehy’s website: https://www.sheehy.senate.gov/services/academy-nominations/.
Earlier this year, President Donald J. Trump appointed Senator Sheehy to the United States Naval Academy Board of Visitors. The board reviews matters related to morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction methods, facilities, finances, academic standards, and other issues concerning the academy.
Senator Sheehy has also organized several informational sessions throughout Montana this year focused on leadership development and opportunities at service academies.
A 2008 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in History, Senator Sheehy served multiple deployments as a US Navy SEAL Officer in Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, and the Pacific region. He met his wife Carmen—who served as a Marine Corps Officer—while both attended the Naval Academy.
