U.S. Senators Steve Daines, Amy Klobuchar, John Boozman, and Raphael Warnock led a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Apr. 15 emphasizing support for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) before its six-year joint review and calling for continued market access and certainty for American agricultural producers.
The senators said that maintaining strong trade relationships with Canada and Mexico is crucial for the success of American agriculture. They highlighted the importance of USMCA in supporting farmers, ranchers, processors, and exporters throughout the supply chain.
“The United States is currently the world’s largest agricultural exporter, with total agricultural exports valued at $176 billion in 2024. Since the Agreement’s entry-into-force, U.S. agricultural exports have increased substantially, particularly to Canada and Mexico,” they wrote in their letter. “For many states, Canada and Mexico represent the largest and second-largest export markets. The market access achieved under USMCA is a critical component of the success of American agriculture and contributes to our secure food supply chain and to the global competitiveness of U.S. producers.” The senators also said that integrated supply chains facilitated by streamlined compliance requirements have strengthened trading networks within North America.
Many senators joined Daines, Klobuchar, Boozman, and Warnock in sending this letter ahead of USMCA’s joint review process. Several industry leaders expressed support as well: “The USMCA has been a true success story for U.S. soybean farmers… ASA greatly appreciates the leadership of Senator Daines, Klobuchar, and Boozman in leading this letter to USTR,” said Scott Metzger from the American Soybean Association; Bryan Goodman from Agricultural Coalition for USMCA called renewal vital; Jed Bower from National Corn Growers Association thanked senators “for taking initiative”; Jamie Kress from National Association of Wheat Growers said “USMCA is essential for U.S. wheat farmers… NAWG thanks Senators Klobuchar, Boozman, and Daines for leading this effort.”
Daines represents Montana in the Senate with offices across his state according to his official website. He serves as a senator bringing prior private sector experience according to his official website, supports public safety initiatives among Montana’s Indian nations according to his official website, focuses on assisting Montanans with federal matters while advocating jobs in energy sectors according to his official website, advances pro-growth tax policies through committee roles according to his official website, maintains deep roots as a fifth-generation Montanan according to his official website, serves on several Senate committees including Finance and Energy according to his official website.
As preparations begin for USMCA’s upcoming joint review process with Congress engagement encouraged by lawmakers such as Daines—who promotes public land access—the agreement remains central not only for agriculture but also broader economic stability.
