Senator Steve Daines, representing Montana, posted a series of statements on X (formerly Twitter) criticizing Senate Democrats and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer over the recent government shutdown. In his tweets, Daines claims that Democratic leaders are prioritizing their party’s far-left wing, to the detriment of the American public.
On September 30, 2025, Daines wrote, “Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats voted to shut down the government tonight to appease their radical far left base, despite fully knowing the negative impact it’ll have on the American ppl. We will keep pushing along with President Trump to reopen the government.”
Continuing his criticism the following day, October 1, 2025, Daines stated, “Senate Democrats should end this shutdown sooner rather than later, so we can take the pain off the American people & restore the fully functioning government that taxpayers deserve.”
Later that morning, Daines reiterated his position with another post: “Chuck Schumer is yielding to the far-left radicals in his party who are demanding this shutdown, and it’s unpopular with the vast majority of Americans.”
The current government shutdown follows a failure by Congress to pass appropriations bills or a continuing resolution before the fiscal deadline. Such impasses have occurred periodically in recent decades, often resulting from disputes over federal spending priorities or policy riders. As a result of shutdowns, federal employees may face furloughs or work without pay, while many government services are suspended until funding is restored.
Senator Steve Daines is a Republican representing Montana since 2015. Chuck Schumer serves as Senate Majority Leader and represents New York. The positions taken by each party reflect ongoing divisions in Congress over budget negotiations and policy direction.
