The public comment period for the Rosebud Coal Mine Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been opened by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), with a planned remote public meeting to take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The EIS is for a proposed fifth amendment to the operating permit for Area B at the Rosebud Mine near Colstrip, according to a DEQ news release. The proposed amendment would add 9,108 acres to Area B, with 5,547 acres disturbed for mining activities, extending the life of the mine by seven years.

Those interested in attending the Oct. 7 meeting via Zoom can register and request access on the EventBrite website, or by calling Moira Davin, public relations specialist, at 406-461-2503, according to the release.

The EIS can be viewed on the DEQ website, and public comments can also be left at the same link, according to the release. Written comments can be submitted by mail as well, and should be addressed to Jen Lane, MEPA coordinator, Montana Department of Environmental Quality, PO Box 200901, Helena, MT 59620-0901.
