The Billings Fire Department has announced a new partnership with School District 2 to introduce a fire safety program aimed at elementary students. Deputy Fire Marshal Becky Biggins expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “After a year and half of planning and preparation, we are so excited to implement this program and get back into the schools to see Billings students in grades K-5 every year!”

The program, known as the Billings Fire Safety Squad, is currently in its pilot stage and will be visiting eight schools within the district. If successful, it is set to expand to all 21 elementary schools in the following school year. Biggins highlighted the importance of reaching students at a younger age by mentioning, "In years past, the fire department’s public education program focused on second graders. Going forward, every student in School District 2, from kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in the Billings Fire Safety Squad program."

Deputy Fire Marshal Biggins explained that the Safety Squad model is designed to provide age-appropriate lessons on safety to elementary school students. The curriculum has been carefully planned and coordinated between the Fire Prevention Bureau and the district to ensure effectiveness. Kyra Gaskill, Executive Director of Secondary Education, emphasized the impact of such collaborations by stating, “Through collaborative efforts like those between the Billings Fire Department and Billings School District 2, we empower our students to recognize hazards and respond effectively in emergencies, laying the foundation for a safer community.”

The program consists of two parts - a classroom presentation conducted by library staff, followed by a fire escape course and home safety stations led by the fire department. To evaluate the program's success, students will undergo pre and post-lesson tests to assess their retention of the information provided. Topics covered include cooking safety, identifying fire hazards, emergency response procedures, creating a home fire escape plan, fire science, burn injury prevention, and more.

The lesson plans for the Billings Fire Safety Squad program are available to the public and can be accessed at BillingsMT.gov/SafetySquad. This collaborative effort between the Billings Fire Department and School District 2 aims to equip students with essential safety knowledge and skills, contributing to a safer community for all.
