The Friends of Canyon Creek Battlefield, the City of Billings, and the Nez Perce National Historical Park have organized an event to recognize recent improvements at the Canyon Creek Battlefield Interpretive kiosk. The open house will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 10 a.m.
Billings Mayor Bill Cole and Steve Thede, Superintendent of the Nez Perce National Historical Park, are scheduled to speak about the historical significance of the battle. Their remarks aim to enhance public awareness regarding the flight and its tragic conclusions.
The site is one of 38 affiliated sites within the Nez Perce National Historical Park that narrate parts of Chief Joseph's 1,300-mile flight with his non-treaty followers. This tragic journey spanned five months from May to October 1877 as the United States Army attempted to forcibly relocate the Nez Perce from their sacred homeland in eastern Oregon to a reservation in northern Idaho.
In preparation for the upcoming 150th anniversary of this flight, new informational signs have been installed by the Friends of Canyon Creek Battlefield on approaches to this historic battlefield. Additionally, a display concerning the Canyon Creek Battle has been recently unveiled by the Yellowstone County Museum.
The event details are as follows:
- Date: Saturday, June 15, 2024
- Time: 10 a.m.
- Location: Canyon Creek Battlefield (intersection of Buffalo Trail and Lipp Road – seven miles north of Laurel)
Speakers include Billings Mayor Bill Cole and Steve Thede from Lapwai, Idaho's Nez Perce National Historical Park.
