The City of Billings is offering assistance to homeowners in removing a noxious weed prevalent in local yards. This initiative is funded by a $25,000 grant from the Montana Department of Agriculture and involves hiring "Buckthorn Slayers" to clear properties of the invasive plant.

Buckthorn Slayers are experts in removal, employing strategies based on factors such as the plant’s size, location, accessibility, season, weather conditions, and soil type. Post-removal, all cut brush will be transported to a City-owned site for chipping. The cleared areas will then be seeded with grass to restore the landscape.

Homeowners can also opt for reimbursement if they invest in replacement shrubs, with a maximum reimbursement of $100 per property upon submission of receipts and proof of purchase documentation.

Property owners must be present during the removal process to discuss details such as which plants should remain undisturbed. Significant changes to yard appearance may occur if substantial buckthorn is present.

Originally introduced to the U.S. for its aesthetic appeal—featuring dark green leaves and purple berries—buckthorn has proven harmful to wildlife due to its berries acting as a laxative without nutritional value. It invades various environments, forming dense barriers that block sunlight and smother native plants, disrupting habitats for wildlife and pollinators. This invasion also prevents regeneration of overstory trees like Cottonwoods along the Yellowstone River.

Because buckthorn spreads through seeds, ongoing efforts are crucial for preventing further spread and protecting both wildlife and the environment.

To schedule an appointment for buckthorn removal, residents can call Prorover at (406) 698-6551. The City will also distribute letters and brochures to property owners in heavily affected areas.
