The Billings Fire Department executed a high-angle rescue on Monday afternoon, successfully retrieving a man trapped in a crevasse on the Rims. The operation commenced when the team arrived shortly before 4:15 p.m. and began searching for the individual, who was reportedly uncooperative and intoxicated. He mentioned seeing nearby buildings but could not determine his exact location.
First responders established visual contact with the man, who was about 20 feet down and actively calling for help. Due to his behavior, safety measures were implemented as part of the rescue efforts. Two one-man over setups were created, with personnel designated to ensure a safe and effective rescue process. A specialized team secured the individual, preparing him for extraction.
By approximately 4:51 p.m., he was safely placed in a rescue harness. The haul team then raised both him and the lead rescuer to safety. Afterward, local law enforcement took custody of the man due to outstanding warrants; he refused medical assistance.
The incident concluded at 16:56, underscoring the complexities involved in high-angle rescues. Emergency responders emphasized the importance of outdoor safety awareness and caution regarding rugged terrain.
Acknowledgment is given to the Billings Police Department and American Medical Response for their essential support during this operation.
